How to Overcome Limiting Beliefs (Techniques That Actually Work)

By Beyza · May 2026

“I'm not good enough.” “I don't deserve success.” “Things never work out for me.” Sound familiar? These are limiting beliefs — and they are running your life more than you know.

What Are Limiting Beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are deeply held convictions about yourself, other people, or the world that constrain your thinking and behaviour. They are usually formed in childhood or through repeated experiences, and they operate mostly below conscious awareness.

The tricky thing about limiting beliefs is that they feel true. That's what makes them so powerful — and so hard to shift through willpower alone.

Common Limiting Beliefs

I'm not smart/talented enough
I don't deserve to be happy
Money is hard to come by
I always self-sabotage
I'm too old to change
People can't be trusted
Success is for other people
I have to work hard to be worthy

Why Positive Thinking Alone Doesn't Work

You've probably tried affirmations. “I am confident. I am successful. I am enough.” And felt nothing — or worse, felt the opposite. That's because the conscious mind saying positive words does not override a deeply held subconscious belief.

To change a limiting belief, you need to work at the level where it lives — the subconscious. That's where NLP, hypnotherapy, and deep coaching come in.

5 Techniques That Actually Shift Limiting Beliefs

1. The Belief Audit

Write down every belief you hold about yourself in the area where you feel stuck. Then ask: where did this come from? How old was I when I decided this? Is it actually true — or just something I experienced once and generalised? Awareness is the first shift.

2. NLP Reframing

Reframing is a core NLP technique that changes the meaning you give to an experience. When you change the frame, you change the feeling — and the belief begins to loosen. A trained NLP Practitioner can do this with you in a single session.

3. Submodality Work

NLP submodalities are the qualities of how you internally represent a belief — its size, colour, location, tone. By changing how a belief is represented in your mind, you change how it feels. Beliefs that felt solid and certain can be made to feel distant and uncertain.

4. Timeline Techniques

Going back along your timeline to the root of a belief — and changing the meaning you gave the experience — is one of the most powerful and lasting ways to clear a limiting belief permanently.

5. Identity Shift Work

Ultimately, limiting beliefs are part of an identity — “I'm the kind of person who...” Coaching at the identity level asks: who do you need to become for this belief to no longer be true? Then we build that identity deliberately.

How Long Does It Take to Change a Limiting Belief?

It depends on how deep the belief is rooted. Some beliefs shift in a single NLP session. Others are woven into identity and take several sessions to fully unravel. But even deeply held beliefs can change — often faster than people expect.

The key is working at the right level with the right tools. Talking about a belief rarely changes it. Working with it directly — at the subconscious level — does.
